Google Apps for Education Accessibility

Summary

This article covers information on Google Apps for Education Accessibility.

Body

Accessibility

One of the three priorities of the Accessible Technology Initiative is to ensure that all students have access to instructional materials, as specifically stated in Chancellor's Office Executive Order 926: "To the extent possible, instructional materials, including online course materials must be available to students with disabilities at the same time it is available to any other student enrolled in a course."

It is the responsibility of faculty to use the learning management system, accessible document formats, and accessible instructional strategies within their own courses to meet this directive.

Google Apps for Education offers accessibility features, including keyboard shortcuts and screen reader support in Google Calendar, Google Chat, Google Docs, and Google Sites. Not all Google applications or features, however, are accessible. Please see the latest Access Technology Higher Education Network (ATHEN) report: ATI Google Apps Accessibility Evaluation.

Instructors should take care not to require the use of these applications or features in the classroom without making appropriate accommodations.
