Overview of IBM Cognos Analytics
Chico State has adopted IBM Cognos Analytics BI as its enterprise-wide reporting and business intelligence (BI) tool. IBM Cognos is a comprehensive reporting and data analysis tool that combines reporting, analysis, and dashboards, enabling shared access across functional teams to leverage their combined skills and promote greater effectiveness throughout the organization.
Chico State data falls into several broad categories: student, financials, financial aid, and human resources. Each category includes additional subdivisions based on data classification. This information is private and sensitive, with many elements protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and other state and federal regulations.
Before requesting data access, review and understand Chico State’s FERPA and Data Protection policies to ensure proper handling of institutional data.
Getting Access to Cognos
Access to IBM Cognos is provisioned automatically based on your position at Chico State. Campus data stewards can grant additional access when your job responsibilities require it. With the appropriate permissions, you can log into Cognos with your Chico State login information.

Data Refresh Schedule and System Availability
Chico State administrative data comes from PeopleSoft systems (CS, CHRS, and CFS) and includes transformations that make the data easier to use in reports. The data updates nightly, so Cognos reports and visualizations reflect the state of campus data as of the end of the previous business day. You can verify the latest data refresh status on the Cognos welcome page.
We recommend subscribing to notifications from the Status Dashboard. If IBM Cognos experiences an outage that affects data availability, the Status Dashboard will serve as the primary communication tool for system availability.
