Managers of Google shared drives cannot delete a shared drive directly in Google Drive. This limitation blocks routine re-organization, clean-up, or retirement of drives that are no longer needed. Until a drive is removed, it continues to appear in Drive for all members, which can cause confusion and clutter.
Environment
This article is relevant to you if:
- You are a manager (or higher-level role) of a Google shared drive.
- You need the entire shared drive, including all contained files and folders, permanently removed.
Solution
Currently, deletion of shared drives directly in Google Drive is disabled. To request a shared drive to be deleted, the manager of the shared drive should contact Learning Technology Services by selecting Request Service from the sidebar.
Root Cause
Self-service deletion of shared drives is disabled to prevent unintended loss of important data. This policy ensures that critical information is not accidentally removed and provides an additional layer of data protection.
