Some users at Chico State are experiencing a limitation on their Zoom meetings, which are restricted to 40 minutes. This impacts users who require longer meeting durations for their activities and may disrupt academic or administrative functions.
Environment
- Chico State Zoom accounts
- Users without licensed Zoom accounts
- Various user roles and affiliations within the university
Solution
There are two possible reasons Zoom might limit your meeting to 40 minutes. The most common reason is because your account doesn't have a Zoom license assigned.
Not all Zoom accounts at Chico State receive Zoom licenses. Licenses are assigned based on a person's affiliation with the university. The following affiliations automatically receive a licensed Zoom account:
- Active faculty (including volunteer faculty)
- Emeritus faculty
- Active state-side staff
- Active students
- Auxiliary staff
- External consultants
- Foundation staff
- People with an active Volunteer POI.
If you don't fit into one of these roles, or if your Zoom license did not get assigned correctly, you can request a Zoom license from Learning Technology Services.
If you fit into one of these roles, ensure you are signing in with your official Chico State Zoom account.
If you're using your Chico State account and you have an affiliation that grants a Zoom license, ensure your meetings have more than one person in them. Meetings with one participant may occasionally be limited to 40 minutes even if you have a Zoom license.
Root Cause
When a Zoom account is not licensed, it defaults to a basic account, which limits meetings to 40 minutes. Licenses are distributed based on specific affiliations with the university to ensure that those who need extended meeting times have access to them. In other cases, Zoom limits the length of a meeting when only one participant is present in the meeting to prevent idle meetings.
