This guide walks you through the steps to embed Kaltura media and recordings in Canvas. Kaltura acts as Chico State's media server, similar to YouTube, allowing both students and faculty to enrich their course materials with video content. Whether you're adding a video to an announcement, a page, assignment, or discussion, the process is streamlined through the Canvas Rich Content Editor.
Prerequisites
To embed videos from Kaltura in Canvas, you'll need the following:
- A video in Kaltura you want to add to a course: How do I create media in Kaltura?
- Access to a Canvas course with permissions to create or edit content using the Rich Content Editor
Step-by-Step Instructions
You can embed your Kaltura videos without worrying about sharing settings. To embed a Kaltura video in Canvas using the Rich Content Editor, do the following:
- Within any Canvas content area that utilizes the Rich Content Editor, select the Kaltura icon to open the Kaltura media selection window.
- Choose the video you wish to embed and select Embed. If you need to upload or record a new video to Kaltura, select + Add New.
- After embedding your video, select Submit or Save to finalize the changes. The video transcript will automatically display beneath the video. If you prefer not to show the transcript, you can get the direct embed code for the Kaltura video and use the Canvas embed feature in the Rich Content Editor.
Troubleshooting
- Video Not Embedding Properly: Ensure you have selected the correct video within Kaltura and that you have permissions to use and embed the video in your course.
- Transcript Display Issues: If the transcript is not displaying as desired, or you wish to remove it, consider using the direct embed code method for more control over the video's appearance and functionality.
