When copyrighted works have been discovered on a machine using a Chico IP address, the owner of the work sends a legal notification to chicodmca@csuchico.edu. Copyright holders contract with 3rd-party companies that specialize in discovering copyrighted works on computers. If they are successful in downloading media, the company logs the IP address and a notice is sent to the ISP that owns the subnet. Upon receipt of such notices, Information Security will determine the owner of the IP address at the time of discovery and is obligated to forward the notice to the likely offender.
