Introduction

Gradescope bubble sheet assignments allow instructors to administer paper-based multiple-choice exams and upload completed sheets for grading. Properly printing the bubble sheet template helps Gradescope recognize student responses when scans are uploaded. Bubble sheets must use the original template, standard-sized white paper, and clearly visible corner marks.

Prerequisites

  • An existing bubble sheet assignment in Gradescope.
  • Access to a printer with standard-sized white paper.
  • The bubble sheet template generated by Gradescope.
  • Review the Gradescope Bubble Sheet Assignment Guide for additional guidance.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Print Bubble Sheets for Your Assignment

To print bubble sheets that Gradescope can recognize, do the following:

  1. Open your bubble sheet assignment in Gradescope.
  2. Download the bubble sheet template for your assignment.
  3. Open the downloaded template and prepare it for printing. Do not make custom edits to the template.
  4. Set the printer to use standard-sized white paper (8.5 x 11 inches in the United States or A4 internationally).
  5. Print the required number of bubble sheets.
  6. Check that all four corner marks are completely visible on every printed page.
  7. Distribute the bubble sheets to students.

For double-sided bubble sheets used with exams containing 100 or more questions, instruct students to use a pencil and eraser instead of a pen. Ink may bleed through the paper and cause grading issues.

Your bubble sheets are now ready for students to complete. Maintaining the original formatting and visible corner marks helps Gradescope identify responses when the completed sheets are scanned.

Troubleshooting

If the printer cuts off any corner marks, adjust the printer settings and reprint the affected sheets.

If students are completing double-sided bubble sheets, use pencil rather than ink to reduce the risk of grading errors.
