Introduction

Canvas LMS includes an AI image generation tool that can create custom images directly from the Rich Content Editor (RCE). You can describe the image you need using a text prompt, generate an image, and insert it into supported Canvas content. This can be useful for adding visual content to pages, assignments, discussions, and other course materials without leaving Canvas.

Prerequisites

Before generating an AI image, make sure:

• You have permission to edit the Canvas content where you want to add the image.
• The AI image generation tool is available in the Rich Content Editor.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Generate an AI Image in Canvas

To generate and add an AI image in Canvas, do the following:

1. Open the Canvas page, assignment, discussion, or other content where you want to add an image.
2. Select Edit to open the Rich Content Editor.
3. From the Rich Content Editor toolbar, select the Image options.
4. Select the option to Generate Image with AI.
5. Enter a detailed description of the image you want Canvas to generate. Include relevant details such as the subject, setting, colors, lighting, and visual style.
6. Select the available image generation options to customize the result.
7. Select Generate.
8. Review the generated image. If necessary, revise your prompt and generate another image.
9. Select the generated image to insert it into your Canvas content.
10. Enter appropriate Alt Text that communicates the image's purpose or relevant visual information.
11. Select Save to save your Canvas content.

The AI-generated image is now included in your Canvas content. Review the saved content to confirm that the image displays correctly and has appropriate alternative text.

Troubleshooting

If the AI image generation option does not appear in the Rich Content Editor, the feature may not be available for the content type you are editing or for your Canvas account.

For better results, use specific prompts that describe the subject, setting, composition, colors, lighting, and desired visual style. Always review AI-generated images for accuracy and suitability before using them in course materials.
