Grading

Gradescope automatically grades bubble sheet assignments as soon as they are uploaded. This may take a few minutes depending on the number of submissions. Once grading is complete, publish grades from the Review Grades page.

Reviewing Uncertain Marks

  1. Access the Grade Submissions page of your assignment.
  2. Select the Uncertain Marks notification at the top of the page.
  3. Review the list of uncertain marks and choose the correct bubble for each.
  4. Select Confirm All Marks to finalize.

Manual Grading

  1. Open the Grade Submissions dashboard.
  2. Select the question to edit.
  3. Adjust the rubric or provide additional feedback.
  4. All rubric changes apply to every student with that rubric item.

Reviewing Grades

After grading, view and publish results from the Review Grades page. If your assignment has multiple versions, use the version tabs to manage grades individually or collectively. You can also Export Evaluations and Export Submissions for individual versions.

Student Answer Report

Select Download Responses to export a .CSV report of student answers and scores. Use this data to perform further analysis or grade comparisons.

Posting Grades to Canvas

  1. Open the Review Grades page.
  2. Select Post Grades to Canvas.
  3. To post all versions together, use the All tab. To post separately, choose each version’s tab and click Post Grades to Canvas.

Ensure each Gradescope version is correctly linked to a Canvas assignment before posting.

Statistics

Gradescope provides assignment statistics such as reliability, standard deviation, and discrimination data. For multi-version assignments, statistics are shown per version.

Reliability

Reliability (Cronbach’s Alpha) measures consistency in grading accuracy. A score above 0.5 indicates acceptable reliability. To improve reliability:

  • Cover multiple topics in the assignment.
  • Increase question count.
  • Review Discriminatory Scores under Item Analysis.

Standard Deviation

Standard deviation shows score variation:

  • Low STD DEV: Similar scores clustered around the mean.
  • High STD DEV: Scores spread across a wider range.

Standard Error of Measurement

SEM indicates grading precision. Example: If a student scores 60 with SEM 3.0, their expected score range is 57–63. A larger SEM means less accurate results.

Item Analysis Report

The report displays each question’s answer distribution:

  • Green = Correct answer percentage
  • Red = Incorrect answers chosen more often

Use this data to improve or adjust future assessments.

Discriminatory Score

Calculated using the point-biserial correlation coefficient, this score measures how well questions distinguish between high- and low-performing students. Questions below 0.2 are flagged for review. Perfect or all-incorrect questions display N/A.

Insights Panel

The Insights Panel flags low discriminatory score questions and categorizes difficulty:

  • Hard: Less than 50% correct
  • Medium: 50–84% correct
  • Easy: 85–100% correct

Use this information to refine question wording or grading rubrics.
