Bubble Sheet Template

Gradescope provides a standardized 200-question bubble sheet template for multiple-choice assessments. The template includes fields for Name, ID, Section, Date, Version, and Other details. You cannot edit this template to add or remove fields or customize questions. Provide your students with a separate question list and answer options outside of Gradescope.

Localized versions of the template are available in Spanish, Turkish, Portuguese, Korean, and Japanese.

Creating a Bubble Sheet Assignment

  1. From your Gradescope course dashboard, select Assignments from the left-hand menu.
  2. Click Create Assignment at the bottom of the page.
  3. Choose Bubble Sheet as the assignment type.
  4. Click Next to continue.

Note: Bubble sheet assignments are available with an Institutional license.

Assignment Settings

Assignment options depend on who uploads submissions (instructor or students).

  1. Enter an assignment name.
  2. Choose whether to enable anonymous grading. Avoid using anonymous grading for instructor-uploaded submissions to ensure proper student matching.
  3. Select who will upload submissions: Instructor or Students.
  4. Set assignment dates: Release Date, Due Date, Late Due Date (optional), and Time Limit (optional).
  5. Enable Group Submissions if applicable, and define Limit Group Size.
  6. Adjust Template Visibility and Rubric Permissions.

Answer Key and Scoring

On the Answer Key page:

  • Assign correct answers to each question.
  • Select Clear Answers to reset if needed.
  • Questions without answers will not be graded.
  • Set points and choose a scoring style:
    • Exact – full points only for all correct answers
    • Partial – partial credit for each correct answer selected
    • Either/Or – full credit for any correct answer

Click Save Answer Key to proceed to the Manage Scans page.

Creating Multiple Versions

Instructors can create up to five versions of a bubble sheet assignment:

  1. On the Answer Key page, click +Add Version.
  2. Define separate answer keys and scoring for each version.
  3. To remove the latest version, click the red X.

Versioning is not available for student-uploaded assignments.

Linking to an LMS

When linking to your LMS (e.g., Canvas):

  • You’ll see options to link to the main assignment container (all versions), unassigned submissions, or individual versions (A, B, etc.).

Example:

  • Bubble (main container)
  • Bubble – Unassigned
  • Bubble – Version A
  • Bubble – Version B

Scanning and Uploading Versions

Students should clearly mark their version letter on the sheet. Multiple versions can be scanned into a single PDF file—Gradescope automatically separates them.

Managing Uncertain Versions

If Gradescope cannot determine a student’s version:

  • You’ll see an Uncertain Versions alert on the Manage Submissions page.
  • Select the alert to view affected students and version options.
  • Review version images and estimated scores for each version.
  • Choose the correct version and click Confirm Versions.

If anonymous grading is enabled, only randomized identifiers will display instead of names.
