Introduction

Canvas allows instructors to track how students interact with content inside a module by setting completion requirements. Requirements define what a student must do for each item in a module—such as view it, mark it as done, or submit an assignment—before the module is considered complete. This helps instructors monitor student progress and guide them through course content in a structured way.

This article explains how to add and configure requirements inside an existing Canvas module.

Prerequisites

  • You must be enrolled in the course as an instructor or designer.
  • The module must already exist in your course.
  • The items inside the module (e.g., assignments, pages, discussions) should already be created.

Step-by-Step Instructions

To set requirements inside a Canvas module, do the following:

  1. Open your course in Canvas.
  2. Next to the module name, select the ⋮ (three dots) icon [1], then select Edit.
  3. Scroll down to the Requirements section [2].
  4. Select +Add Requirement.
  5. For each module item, choose how students must complete it:
    • View the item
    • Mark as done
    • Submit the assignment
    • Score at least X points
  6. When finished, select Update Module to save your changes.

Now, students will see progress indicators for each required item, and Canvas will track whether they’ve completed the module.

  • Troubleshooting

  • If you don’t see the Requirements section, make sure the module has at least one item in it.
  • Only published items can have requirements set.
  • If using “Score at least X points,” ensure that the item is graded.
