Instructors sometimes want students to submit video assignments, such as recorded presentations or demonstrations. While Canvas offers a built-in Media Recordings option, it does not work well with Kaltura and should be avoided. Instead, Kaltura videos must be submitted using the Text Entry option, which enables students to embed videos through the Rich Content Editor. This article shows how to create a video assignment that works correctly with Kaltura.

Prerequisites

  • Teacher access to create and edit assignments in your Canvas course

Step-by-Step Instructions

To create an assignment that allows students to submit videos using Kaltura, do the following:

  1. From your Canvas course navigation, select Assignments.
  2. Select + Assignment to create a new assignment.
  3. Enter a title and description for the assignment.
For a better experience, share the following guide with students so they know how to submit their video correctly: Submit a Kaltura Video to an Assignment in Canvas.
  4. In the Submission Type dropdown, select Online.
  5. Under Online Entry Options, check Text Entry.
Do not select Media Recordings—this uses Canvas’s native video tool and is incompatible with Kaltura.
  6. Adjust any additional assignment settings (e.g., due date, points, rubric) as needed.
  7. Select Save or Save & Publish.

Now, students will be able to open the assignment and use the Rich Content Editor to embed a Kaltura video.

Troubleshooting

  • Students don’t see a Kaltura option in the Rich Content Editor: Ask them to use the Apps (plug) icon in the editor. If Kaltura options are still missing, contact IT Support Services.

  • Students submitted using Canvas Media Recording: Edit the assignment, ensure only Text Entry is enabled under Online Entry Options, and ask students to resubmit following the student guide.
