When trying to open Zoom from a Canvas course, you may see the error message:
"The instructor's email (jdoe@csuchico.edu) is invalid (2216_)". This error prevents access to the Zoom tool in Canvas and typically indicates that Zoom is not recognizing the correct Chico State account. This issue affects both instructors and students when their Zoom login session is associated with a personal or non-Chico State account.

Environment
This article applies to you if all of the following are true:
- You see error code 2216 when trying to access Zoom through Canvas
- The error message references your email address (e.g., jdoe@csuchico.edu)
- You are signed in to a personal Zoom account or have previously used Zoom outside of Chico State's Zoom portal
Solution
To fix the Zoom error code 2216 in Canvas, follow these steps:
- Go to https://zoom.us
- From the upper-right corner, select your profile icon (either your profile picture or initials)
- From the dropdown menu, select Sign Out
- After signing out, go to https://www.csuchico.edu/zoom
- Select Sign In
- Follow the prompts to sign in using your Chico State credentials
- Return to Canvas and try opening Zoom again from your course navigation menu
Now you should be able to access Zoom in Canvas without seeing the error. Zoom will correctly recognize your Chico State account and the instructor's account.
Root Cause
When users are signed in to a personal Zoom account (such as one created with a Gmail or other non-Chico State email), Zoom cannot authenticate their access to Chico State-hosted Zoom meetings within Canvas. This results in error code 2216, which incorrectly reports the instructor’s account as invalid. Signing in through the Chico State Zoom portal ensures your account is properly linked.
