Introduction

Gradescope is a tool that allows instructors to streamline grading for a variety of assessment types, including exams, homework, and online assignments. By integrating Gradescope directly into your Canvas course through the Assignments page, you and your students can access and manage assessments without navigating away from Canvas. This guide walks you through how to connect a Gradescope assignment using the External Tool option in Canvas.

Prerequisites

  • You must be an instructor in a Canvas course shell.

  • Gradescope must be enabled in your Canvas environment (this is typically set up by default at Chico State).

  • You must have a Gradescope account (automatically created upon first use via Canvas integration).

Step-by-Step Instructions

To connect a Gradescope assignment in Canvas, do the following:

1. Create a Gradescope Assignment in Canvas

  1. In your Canvas course, select Assignments from the course navigation.

  2. Select + Assignment to create a new assignment.

  3. Enter an assignment title (e.g., Quiz 1 – Gradescope).

  4. Scroll to Submission Type, then choose External Tool from the dropdown.

  5. Select Find, then choose Gradescope from the list of tools.

  6. (Optional) Check Load This Tool in a New Tab if you prefer to open Gradescope in a separate tab.

  7. Set the assignment’s points, due date, and other settings as needed.

  8. Select Save & Publish.

2. Link Your Canvas Course to Gradescope

  • The first time you launch a Gradescope-linked assignment, Canvas will prompt you to link your Canvas course to Gradescope.

  • Choose Link to a new Gradescope course, or select an existing one if applicable.

3. Set Up and Manage Your Assessment in Gradescope

  • Create your assessment in Gradescope (e.g., Homework, Exam, Online Assignment).

  • To import your students, select Roster in Gradescope, then choose Sync Canvas Roster.

  • After grading is complete in Gradescope, select Post Grades to Canvas to send scores to the Canvas Gradebook.

Troubleshooting

  • If you do not see Gradescope listed under External Tools, contact IT Support to confirm it is enabled for your course.

  • If grades fail to post to Canvas, make sure the assignment is published and that your Gradescope assignment is linked to the correct Canvas assignment.
