Kaltura videos and My Media in Canvas fail to load properly. Users experience a blank square where videos should appear or a blank screen when accessing My Media. Additionally, when visiting media.csuchico.edu directly, the page displays only broken text with no functional content. This issue persists across multiple devices for the same user.

Environment

  • Canvas LMS
  • Kaltura integrations, including My Media and video quizzes
  • Privacy Badger browser extension enabled
  • Affects both instructors and students

Solution

To fix Kaltura loading issues caused by Privacy Badger, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Privacy Badger extension from your browser's extensions tray.
  2. Expand the potential tracker list by selecting the appropriate option [1].
  3. In the list of trackers, identify domains ending in "kaltura.com" [2]. At a minimum, the following domains need to be allowlisted:
    • cdnapisec.kaltura.com
    • assets.mediaspace.kaltura.com
    • cdnsecakmi.kaltura.com
    • If you are a student taking video quizzes, also allowlist analytics.kaltura.com.
  4. To allowlist a domain, move the slider for each of these domains all the way to the right. Alternatively, disable Privacy Badger entirely for canvas.csuchico.edu and media.csuchico.edu by using the "disable for site" option [3].
Screenshot of the Privacy Badger interface with Kaltura domains highlighted in the tracker list and sliders adjusted to allow tracking.

Now, Kaltura videos and My Media will load correctly within Canvas. You can also access media.csuchico.edu without display issues.

Root Cause

When Privacy Badger is enabled, it detects Kaltura-related domains (e.g., cdnapisec.kaltura.com, assets.mediaspace.kaltura.com) as trackers and blocks them by default. Since Kaltura's services rely on these domains for content delivery and functionality, blocking them prevents videos and My Media from loading. This is intended behavior for Privacy Badger as part of its tracking prevention, but allowlisting specific domains resolves the issue.
