Students notice that images embedded in Canvas pages display as locked icons (padlocks). The issue also occurs for instructors in student preview mode. This issue occurs when the uploaded images are stored in an unpublished folder in the Files area of the course. Even if the individual files are published, students will not have access if the parent folder is unpublished. This can impact student access to essential course materials.

Solution
To fix the issue where media files appear as locked in Canvas, follow these steps:
- From the course, select Files in the course sidebar.
- In the Files area, locate the folder containing the locked media files.
- Check the folder’s visibility status. If the folder is unpublished, select Published to make it accessible, or choose Only available with link if you do not want students to see the folder in the Files area.
- Ensure that the individual media files within the folder are also set to Published or Only available with link.
- Test the visibility in Student View to confirm the issue is resolved.
Now the media files should display correctly for students based on the chosen visibility setting.
Root Cause
When a folder in Canvas is unpublished, all files within that folder, even if individually published, inherit the folder's visibility settings. As a result, the media files appear locked for students. Files or folders marked as unpublished are hidden from students unless visibility is adjusted.
