In Canvas, when you insert a document, you will be able to determine how it displays to students.

Link Options Window in Canvas

1. Disable Preview

When students click on the document link, this option forces a download of the document to the student’s device.

2. Preview in overlay

When students click on the document link, the document will open immediately in Canvas on top of the current page. There will be options to download, view in alternative formats, see information about the document, or close to get back to the page from which the document was linked.

See the GIF below for an example of how the preview in overlay option will display.

3. Preview in-line

When students click on this document link, the document expands inline on the page itself. Once expanded, there is an option to minimize the preview. There is also an option to download the document.

Preview in-line with Expand preview by Default on

Students don’t need to click on the link to expand the document as it will already be expanded. They can minimize and re-expand the preview. There is also an option to download with this option.

See the GIF below for an example of how the preview inline option will display.
