Create a Video Quiz

Kaltura Video Quizzes let instructors add questions directly into a video to check understanding and increase engagement. If you want students to take the quiz more than once, you must enable multiple attempts in the Kaltura quiz settings. Canvas assignment settings alone do not control this behavior for Kaltura Video Quizzes.

To create a Kaltura Video Quiz:

  1. Open My Media in Canvas or Kaltura.
  2. Select Add New, then select Video Quiz.
Add Video Quiz in the My Media window

  3. Choose the video you want to turn into a quiz.
  4. If your video is not yet in My Media, upload it first, then return to create the quiz.
  5. When the Quiz Editor opens, review the available quiz details, scoring options, and experience settings.

Quiz Settings and Scoring

In the Quiz Editor, you can control how the quiz behaves and what students see after they submit it.

Scoring options include:

  • Allow Multiple Attempts: lets students take the quiz more than once.
  • Do Not Show Scores: shows a confirmation message after submission without displaying a score.
  • Show Scores: shows students their quiz results after submission.
  • Include Answers: shows correct and incorrect answers, and any rationale entered during quiz creation.

Experience options include:

  • Allow Answers Change: lets students revise answers before submitting during review.
  • Allow Skip: lets students skip a question and return to it later.
  • Do Not Allow Skip: requires students to answer before moving forward.
  • No Seeking Forward: prevents students from moving ahead in the video past what they have already viewed.

Add Quiz Questions

To add questions to your video quiz:

  1. Move the video playhead to the point where you want the question to appear.
  2. Select Add a Question in the video preview window.
Add a Question option in the Video Quiz menu

  3. Choose the question type:
    • Multiple Choice
    • True/False
    • Reflection Point
    • Open-Ended
  4. Enter the question text in the Add a Question Here field.
  5. Enter answer choices as needed:
    • For Multiple Choice questions, enter the correct answer in the Add CORRECT Answer Here field.
    • Add at least one additional answer choice. You can add up to four answer choices total.
    • Use the Shuffle icon if you want to randomize the answer order.
    • For True/False questions, select the correct answer.
  6. Repeat this process for each question you want to add.
  7. Select Preview to test the quiz.
  8. When finished, select Done, then select Go to Media Page.

Allow Multiple Attempts

If students can only take the quiz once, even though multiple attempts are enabled in Canvas, update the setting in Kaltura:

  1. Open My Media in Canvas.
  2. Locate the video quiz you want to update.
  3. Select Edit.
  4. If needed, select Launch Editor.
  5. In the Video Quiz Editor, open Quiz, then Scores.
  6. Enable Allow Multiple Attempts.
  7. Enter the number of attempts allowed.
  8. Choose which score Kaltura should keep.
  9. Select Done to save your changes.

After this setting is enabled, students can retake the Kaltura Video Quiz based on the options you selected.

Troubleshoot Quiz Issues

  • If questions or answers do not save correctly, make sure you select Done after adding them.
  • If some questions do not load properly during testing, leave at least 10 seconds between questions in the video.
  • If the video quiz does not play correctly, confirm the original video is uploaded and playable in My Media.
  • If students are limited to one attempt, check the Kaltura quiz settings and make sure Allow Multiple Attempts is enabled there.
