PeopleSoft error "Invalid portal name"

Summary

This error occurs when a user has logged into multiple PeopleSoft instances from the same web browser, such as PeopleSoft CS and PeopleSoft HR.

Body

Some users who log into PeopleSoft encounter an error such as the following:

STR_PCMINVPORTAL: Invalid portal name EMPLOYEE in request.
Portal not defined. Unable to process request with an invalid portal.

This can occur when trying to access different PeopleSoft instances in the same browser – trying to access PeopleSoft HR (human resources) while you still have an instance of PeopleSoft CS (student/campus solutions) open without realizing it.  For example: if you have updated your Chico State Alerts contact information, recently accessed the Class Schedule, Student Center or Faculty Center, or any other public-facing page served out of CS and then try accessing your Human Resources Employee Information. This issue is commonly called the “cookie collision”.

Simultaneous login into multiple PeopleSoft instances is not supported at this time. If you must do work in multiple PeopleSoft instances, it is best practice to sign out before switching instances.

The recommended workaround:

  1. Try a different web browser.
  2. Use an incognito window.
  3. Clear your browser cookies.

Common functions within PeopleSoft CS:
