When users attempt to embed a video from Kaltura using the Browse, Search, and Embed (BSE) tool within the Rich Content Editor in Canvas, they receive an "Application Error" message. This issue primarily affects users who have not yet authorized the Kaltura app within Canvas, preventing them from embedding videos as intended.
Environment
- Canvas LMS
- Kaltura integration with Canvas
- Rich Content Editor in Canvas
- Browse, Search, and Embed (BSE) tool for Kaltura videos
Solution
To fix the "Application Error" when embedding a Kaltura video in Canvas, do the following:
- From the Canvas global navigation, select My Media.
- If prompted, authorize the Kaltura Scoped Key to grant necessary permissions.
- Return to the location in Canvas where you want to embed the video.
- Use the Browse, Search, and Embed tool in the Rich Content Editor to embed your Kaltura video.
Now, your video should be successfully embedded in the Canvas Rich Content Editor without triggering the error.
Root Cause
When users have not authorized the Kaltura app within Canvas, the Browse, Search, and Embed tool does not prompt for the necessary permissions, leading to the "Application Error." Authorizing the Kaltura Scoped Key via My Media ensures that the integration functions correctly, allowing videos to be embedded without issues. This is a known issue and Kaltura is working on a resolution.
